Who Runs the Program
PSEG Long Island operates Long Island’s electric grid and runs its residential energy-efficiency programs, including rebates for heat pumps through its Home Comfort program. Because the rebates are paid by the electric utility, they apply to electric heat pumps – not to gas boilers or furnaces.
What Equipment Qualifies
- Air-source heat pumps – ducted systems and ductless mini-splits, generally cold-climate models on the program’s qualified equipment list
- Ground-source (geothermal) heat pumps – typically rebated at a higher rate
- Heat pump water heaters – a separate rebate
Rebate amounts and structure change from year to year – recent program years have used both per-ton and capped whole-home amounts. Check the current figures on PSEG Long Island’s Home Comfort page before you sign a contract.
Extra Help for Income-Eligible Households
Income-qualified customers can receive substantially more through PSEG Long Island’s Home Comfort Plus program, and New York State’s NYSERDA EmPower+ program offers additional funding for eligible households. These can cover most or all of a project in some cases.
How to Apply
- Rebates are generally processed through a participating contractor – ask any installer whether they participate in the PSEG Long Island program
- Confirm the exact equipment model qualifies before you commit
- Size the system properly; programs are built around heat pumps that can carry the home’s heating load
- Keep your invoice and equipment details until the rebate is paid

Rebate FAQ
Do ductless mini-splits qualify for PSEG Long Island rebates?
Qualifying ductless heat pumps are generally eligible as air-source heat pumps. The model has to be on the program’s qualified equipment list, so confirm it before you buy.
Who files the rebate paperwork?
In most cases the participating contractor submits the rebate on your behalf. Ask about it up front and get the rebate amount written into your quote.
Is there still a federal tax credit for heat pumps?
No. The federal 25C credit ended for equipment installed after December 31, 2025. Utility rebates and state programs are now the main incentives.
Do I have to remove my boiler to get a rebate?
Not necessarily – many Long Island homes keep their boiler as backup. Program rules on sizing and backup heat can affect the rebate amount, so check current requirements before you design the system.
