Long Island’s humid summers, finished basements and older homes that have been renovated and sealed up all affect the air inside. Most comfort complaints we see here are really humidity or airflow problems – and they’re usually fixable without replacing your heating or cooling.

Basement Humidity and Dehumidification

The EPA recommends keeping indoor humidity between 30% and 50%. Finished basements in Hicksville often run well above that in summer, which leads to musty smells, mold risk and a house that feels clammy even with the AC on.

  • A whole-home or basement dehumidifier, drained to a floor drain or condensate pump, controls moisture without emptying buckets
  • Your air conditioner isn’t a dehumidifier for a cool basement – it shuts off before the basement dries out
  • An oversized AC makes humidity worse by short-cycling, so right-sizing matters upstairs too

Better Filtration

Filters are rated by MERV. Higher numbers catch finer particles but also restrict airflow. Many residential systems can use a MERV 8–13 filter; going higher without checking can strain the blower. A deeper media filter cabinet lets you filter better with less restriction.

Fresh-Air Ventilation

Tighter, renovated homes can trap moisture and stale air. An energy-recovery or heat-recovery ventilator (ERV/HRV) brings in fresh air while recovering much of the heating or cooling energy – useful in homes that feel stuffy or show window condensation.

Dry Winter Air

Forced-air heat can dry a house out in January. A humidifier installed on the furnace helps, set so windows don’t fog. Homes with radiators or baseboard usually use standalone humidifiers instead. See heating for the rest of your system.

Carbon Monoxide Safety

New York’s Amanda’s Law requires carbon monoxide alarms in homes with fuel-burning appliances such as boilers, furnaces and water heaters. Test yours regularly, and have fuel-burning equipment inspected every year. If an alarm sounds, get everyone outside and call 911 – see 24/7 emergency HVAC.

Indoor Air Quality FAQ

Why is my basement so humid in summer?

Basements stay cool, so humid outdoor air that gets in reaches high relative humidity – and the upstairs AC rarely runs long enough to dry it. A dedicated dehumidifier is usually the fix.

What MERV filter should I use?

Many home systems work well with MERV 8–13. Higher ratings filter more but restrict airflow, so check your system’s airflow before going higher – a thicker media filter is often the better upgrade.

Will a bigger air conditioner fix humidity?

No – usually the opposite. An oversized AC cools quickly and shuts off before it removes moisture. Right-sizing, fan settings and dehumidification work better.
