What’s included80% vs 95%Pairing with ACFAQ
Replacing a furnace is more than swapping a box. Venting, ductwork and gas piping decide how well – and how safely – the new one runs.
What a Proper Installation Includes
- A Manual J load calculation – many older furnaces are oversized for the house
- A ductwork check, since undersized or leaky ducts limit what any new furnace can do
- Correct venting for the furnace type – chimney connection or new PVC venting
- Gas piping, and coordination with National Grid when converting from oil
- Permits where required, and removal of the old furnace
- Start-up checks: gas pressure, combustion, temperature rise and safeties
80% vs. 95%+ Efficiency Furnaces
80% AFUE
Vents through the chimney, often needing a chimney liner. Lower upfront cost.
90–98% AFUE (condensing)
Vents through PVC pipe and needs a condensate drain. Higher cost, lower gas bills.
Pairing With AC or a Heat Pump
If your central AC is also aging, replacing the furnace and AC together gets you matched equipment and one installation. Some homes add a heat pump instead of an AC for a dual-fuel setup – the heat pump handles milder weather and the furnace takes over in deep cold (see heat pumps).
Still on oil? See oil-to-gas conversion – tank, utility and new furnace in one project.
Furnace Installation FAQ
What size furnace do I need?
It should come from a load calculation of your house, not square footage or the old furnace’s rating. Oversized furnaces short-cycle, wear faster and heat unevenly.
Is a high-efficiency furnace worth it?
Often, if you can vent it with PVC and will stay in the house long enough to recover the extra cost in gas savings. We price both options so you can compare.
How long does furnace installation take?
A like-for-like replacement is usually done in a day. New venting, ductwork changes or a fuel conversion take longer – the timeline is in your quote.
